Trial Sparks Hope for Child Brides

"A 15-year old girl resisted the pressure and filed a complaint to court because she did not want to get married. She was a future child bride who ought to marry without her consent in violation of the rights of the child and the rights of women." reports bianet.

“Child Brides” in the Parliament

The final meeting of the Child Brides project of the Flying Broom, which was initiated in 2010 and conducted with the support of Sabanci Foundation, will take place at the Parliament on October 27, Thursday.

Note for men on child marriages

Each day, 25,000 girls are married off to men, usually older than them, without having a word to say on their own fates. They almost immediately drop out of school to do housework.

Child brides in Turkey

Early and force marriages have been on international organizations agenda; however, there is still much that needs to be done. Menekse Tokyay gives a brief introduction of the problem in her article published in Southeast European Times.

Petition against Early Marriages

Several signatures have been collected so far for the “Child Brides” project conducted by Flying Broom with the support of the Sabancı Foundation. The signatures collected will be submitted to the Parliament, related Ministries and commissions in order to act as a concrete step taken in the solving of a social problem by legal regulations on child marriages and a ban on the marriages of the underage.
