Database 1
With the information in this database, Flying Broom aims to
present organizations founded by women
constituted under various names: associations, foundations, groups, initiatives, enterprises, corporations, cooperatives and platforms. These organizations come together to draw
attention to and defend women’s
rights and to find solutions
to women’s problems.
Founded in 1996, the most important objective of Flying Broom is to enhance
the dialog between women’s organizations. Fourten years ago women’s
organizations in Turkey seemed quite inefficient.
Our primary goal has been to
contribute to the interaction among them to
make it efficient. As we approach our
15th anniversary with these objectives in mind, Flying Broom
continues to pursue its mission
to share accurate information about women’s organizations
by mapping them throughout Turkey.
Flying Broom believes that more
dialog will increase and strengthen
organizations. We first prepared the “Database of Women’s Organizations in Turkey Project”
at the end of 2002. Within the framework
of that project, a survey was begun
and we visited
organizations located in 41
cities. Detailed information about the organizations were gathered using
the research techniques of social sciences, particularly interview and observation.
University students from Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir and
Eskişehir also participated
in the survey. The results of the survey have
been shared on the website of Flying Broom in the format of the database. Moreover, these results were
collected in a book and in a CD, and they were distributed
to women at the 2nd National Women’s Civil Society
Organizations Assembly, which took place
in Ankara, with the contribution of representatives
of more than 450 women’s organizations.
Database 2
Flying Broom has
determined that it is necessary to carry
out another survey and has implemented a project called “Mapping the Women’s
Organizations in Turkey and Needs Analysis”.
This new project aims to
continue throughout 2009 with an agenda of field research, research conferences and assessment meetings. In this
project, the data in the existing
“Database of Women’s Organizations” has been updated. Carried out in Adana, İzmir, Gaziantep, Mersin, Van, Muğla, Kars and Ankara, in this project, we worked
with Women’s Research and Implementation
Centers at the universities in these cities. University students who were
appointed to complete field research conducted a comprehensive questionnaire on women’s organizations in their cities by
visiting them one by one.
Flying Broom team updated the
information on the women’s organizations in other cities using
its own networks
of communication. These
efforts enhanced the scope of the
database improving and including additonal
information in it.
This study, which we hope
will be beneficial to you, was
developed as a result of the “Mapping the
Women’s Organizations in Turkey and Needs
Analysis” project. This project also
aims to strengthen
the dialog and cooperation among the Women’s
Research and Implementation Centers of the universities and women’s organizations.
This database will not only supply
information about questions like: How many women’s
organizations are there in Turkey? What are their
objectives? Where do they work? But we hope it will
also help to build connections
among organizations and foster cooperative
activitiy.
We thank everyone who contributed
to this study.
